Social media is forever changing which makes it easy to miss an update from time to time. Twice a month, we look into three of the latest key updates from the past few weeks from the various social media giants. Here’s what’s been happening recently…
Facebook Provides New Tips on How to Set Boundaries in Messenger to Avoid Harmful Interactions
With messaging becoming an even more important connection tool over the past year, that’s also increased negative interactions in messaging apps, and harmful exchanges, which can cause significant mental and emotional impacts, whether intentional or not.
With this in mind, Facebook recently worked with psychologist Dr. Linda Papadopoulos to establish a new framework designed to help users set healthy boundaries for their DM interactions, and avoid potentially concerning chats – which, really, is key info for any messaging user to have.
As you can see in the above tree diagram, Facebook’s overview outlines how users can identify concerning interactions, and when they should take a step back. The overview also points to the various tools in Messenger, including its block and report functions, establishing a simple process to help users better manage these situations.
As explained by Messenger: “Sometimes, people can overstep our boundaries online – whether they mean to or not. To spot the warning signs, Dr. Papadopoulos says: “It might sound basic, but check your own temperature – how am I feeling? Am I feeling anxious? Am I noticing my feelings change? If you feel a bit worse about yourself every time you speak to a certain person – or if even thinking about speaking to that person makes you feel anxious – that’s a huge red flag.”

Facebook Adds Cross App Group Chat Functionality in Messenger and Instagram
Facebook has announced a raft of new features for Messenger and Instagram Direct, including cross-app group chats, so you can engage in group discussions between the two apps, new group typing indicators to boost engagement, and polls in your IG DMs.
The main addition is Instagram-Messenger cross-app group chats – as explained by Facebook:
“Last year, we announced cross-app messaging between Messenger and Instagram. With this update, you’ll be able to start group chats between your Instagram and Messenger contacts”
So, functionally, it’s not a major change, given that the option to chat across the two apps between individuals has been available since last September. But it does add another element, while it’s also another step in Facebook’s broader messaging integration plan, which, eventually, will also include WhatsApp, enabling users of each individual platform to message others on whatever app they choose.
That will also necessitate full encryption of Instagram and Messenger DMs, in line with WhatsApp’s security defaults, which looks set to be a bigger hill to climb for the company.
Twitter Opens Nominations for ‘Best of Tweets’ Ad Campaign Awards for 2021
Have you run any great campaigns on Twitter in 2021? If so, then you could be up for an award, with Twitter once again holding its ‘Best of Tweets’ competition to crown the best brand tweets of the year.
As explained by Twitter:
“Twitter’s Best Of Tweets is our hall of fame, our GOAT, our crowning achievement for the brands that creatively leveraged Twitter this year to launch something new, or to connect to what’s happening like no one else could. And we want to hear from you, does your brand deserve to be crowned a winner?”
The awards will look to celebrate the best tweet campaigns in a range of categories, with last year’s event recognising campaigns from Gatorade, Uber, Ben & Jerry’s and more.
There’s no physical award or prize, as such, but you do get the additional recognition, and promotion as part of the event.
In order to be eligible for nomination, you’ll need to summarise your campaign into a few sentences, and then provide an explanation as to why it should be crowned as one of the best. Which can be tougher than it sounds, but by looking at the awards from last year, you can likely get some idea as to what Twitter’s award judges are seeking, in terms of impact, reach, etc.
Brands are able to nominate their campaigns here, with nominations closing on October 12th (so best to get moving).
