Social media is forever changing which makes it easy to miss an update from time to time. Twice a month, we look into three of the latest key updates from the past few weeks from the various social media giants. Here’s what’s been happening recently…

Instagram Adds New Data Analytics To Insights

Instagram’s looking to provide more data for marketers with an update to its Insights element for business and creator profiles, which will give you more specific info on who’s engaging with your content – whether they follow your profile or not – as well as the total reach of your posts.

The new data points will help guide your posting decisions, and provide more opportunity to optimise your approach based on more specific data points.

The new metrics being added to Instagram insights are:

  • Accounts engaged – This will show the total number of accounts that interacted with your content in a given time period
  • Engaged audience – This data will provide demographic insights into the users that are engaging with your content, whether they follow your profile or not, including top cities, top countries, top age ranges and gender
  • Reached Audience – Similar to Engaged Audience, this will provide demographic information about the people you’ve reached with your posts in a given time period, including top cities, top countries, top age ranges and gender

The additional data points could be a huge addition, with increased capacity to drive specific performance notes, and optimise your content approach based on what’s working.

Instagram Will Enable Users to Upload Photos and Videos via Desktop from This Week

More from Instagram here as it is finally adding image and video posting functionality from the desktop version of the platform as of October 21st, providing a more centralised way for social media managers to maintain their IG presence.

The process, which will facilitate the posting of photos and videos of less than one minute in length, will not include Stories or Reels uploads at this stage. But it will make it a little bit easier for social media managers to stay across their various apps and posts, by providing a way to upload content for each platform from the one place – so you won’t have to keep saving images in varying ways to then upload from your phone, etc.

TikTok Launches its Inaugural ‘Discover List’ to Highlight Top Influencers in the App

Looking to get a better handle on TikTok, and an understanding of the key trends and drivers of conversation and engagement in the app?

This could help – this week, TikTok has announced the launch of its inaugural ‘Discover List’, which highlights 50 of the most influential creators in the app, from various communities, and essentially provides a showcase of some of the top voices and trendsetters on the platform.

As explained by TikTok:

Creators are the heart and soul of TikTok. From the pioneers driving change, to the tastemakers whipping up one-of-a-kind creations in the kitchen, to the trendsetters originating cultural moments, we’re honoured that such an incredible group of creators has found a home on TikTok. That’s why we created The Discover List: our first-ever list highlighting TikTok stars who are changing the game in their respective lanes — and beyond.”

The Discover List is presented on a new mini-site, which provides an overview of the influencers in each of the defined categories. This could be a helpful way to learn more about some of the top creators and trends in the app, and improve your TikTok knowledge.
